Total Prize Money AUD$750,000
1000 metres / 5 furlongs (straight course)
No age and sex restrictions (non-winners ineligible to enter)
First run in 1955, the Black Caviar Lightning (G1) is run at Flemington Racecourse over 1000m (5 furlongs), with horses 2yo & Upwards carrying Standard Weight-For-Age.
The race is conducted on a straight course, of a width of up to 30 metres, and with a field limit of 20 horses.
The Flemington straight course, starting from a chute that joins the course proper, is perfectly flat. Historically, riders took one side of the course or another, looking for the rail to guide them in the race, with the field often splitting to both rails. However, in recent years and following the track reconstruction in 2007, the field more often than not packs in one group up the centre of the track.
The course record for 1000m at Flemington is 55.42 sec, set by Black Caviar in February 2013.
