Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne
Total Prize Money A$1,000,000
1200 metres / 6 furlongs (straight course)
3YOs & upwards
First run in 1960, the A$1,000,000 Darley Classic is run at Flemington Racecourse over 1200 metres (6 furlongs), with horses 3YO & Upwards carrying Standard Weight-for-Age.
The race is conducted on a straight course, of a width of up to 30 metres, and with a field limit of 20 horses. The Flemington straight course, starting from a chute that joins the course proper, is perfectly flat.
Historically, riders took one side of the course or another, looking for the rail to guide them in the race, with the field often splitting to both rails.
However, in recent years the field more often than not packs in one group up the centre of the track.
